About this recipe

A bit about this recipe

Spaghetti Bolognese is one of the most well-known Italian dishes worldwide, but its origins can be traced back to the city of Bologna, located in northern Italy. The traditional Bolognese sauce, or ragù alla Bolognese, is a slow-cooked meat sauce made with a combination of ground beef, pork, pancetta, tomatoes, and other flavorful ingredients like onion, garlic, celery, and carrots. The dish dates back centuries, with the earliest recorded recipe for a meat-based sauce in Emilia-Romagna appearing in the 18th century.

Interestingly, in Italy, Bolognese sauce is typically served with wider pasta like tagliatelle, pappardelle, or fettuccine rather than spaghetti, as the sauce clings better to the flat, broad surfaces. The version of Spaghetti Bolognese that is popularized around the world has adapted over time, often including tomatoes as the dominant ingredient, which is less traditional in authentic Italian ragù. Despite the differences, this comforting dish has become a favorite for families across the globe, cherished for its rich, meaty sauce and simple preparation.

Outside Italy, Spaghetti Bolognese is often made with a tomato-heavy sauce, ground beef, and served over spaghetti noodles, with variations incorporating ingredients like red wine, oregano, and Parmesan cheese. It is also a common staple in British, American, and Australian households, where it has become a beloved weeknight dinner option.

Whether you’re making a more authentic Italian version or a globalized version, the key to a great Bolognese sauce is patience. The sauce is best when simmered for a few hours to allow the flavors to meld together and create a deep, savory taste. Pairing it with spaghetti, a thinner pasta, has become a common practice globally, and although not traditional, it creates a delicious, hearty meal loved by many.

For a richer taste, consider adding milk or cream to the sauce, which is a traditional technique in the original Bolognese recipes to soften the acidity of the tomatoes and enhance the creaminess.
